Our History

LRBT was established in 1984 by 2 retiring businessmen Graham Layton & Zaka Rahmatulla.

LRBT began its free services in Tando Bago in District Badin in 1984 as a small mobile unit.

In its first year of operation 11,699 patients visited its Out Patients Department (OPD) and 546 major and minor eye surgeries were performed.

LRBT has now grown to a network of 18 eye hospitals & 55 clinics.

The network of hospitals and CEHCs is spread over 4 provinces of the country in a manner that no Pakistani is more than 3 hour bus ride away from an LRBT facility.

During our 32 years of existence over 36 million patients have been treated and over 3.6 million major and minor surgeries have been performed

Over the last 32 years, the prevalence of blindness has declined by almost 50%. This is a great success story & LRBT is a major contributor in making it happen. Various awards and tokens of appreciation have been received by LRBT from the Federal & Provincial governments of Pakistan. In 2016, LRBT received awards from the Marketing Association of Pakistan (MAP) as well as from the government of Balochistan in lieu of the contribution towards eradication of blindness.

All treatment as well as surgery at LRBT is totally free for the poor complying to our mission, “No man, woman or child should go blind simply because they cannot afford the treatment.” LRBT has touched & improved the lives of more people than any other NGO in Pakistan.
